Main Plot: This is the continuation to ‘Shock of the New’ where they left the fans off with the kidnapping of Brennan Mulwray. We also see the foundation of the team’s relationships between each other as it’s proven between Jesse-Shalimar-Adam thing. After Emma is rescued from the GSA, the mutant-x team has to find out if Brennan has been recruited to the GSA side, and if no, rescue him. Brennan’s recruitment is less than voluntary. The subdermal-governor, a persuasion instrument implanted in the back of his neck and conducive of extreme pain, turns him into a virtual slave of the GSA. Eckhart is bent on finding every new mutant there is. He captures and threatens the telepath Ruby Bishop, one of the Underground’s main figures. Brennan is forced to use his powers to capture new mutants found in the compromised safehouse, but he lets Jesse escape intentionally to report back to Adam. With MX realizing that Brennan is still after all on their side, they set on a mission to find him and the other new mutants. With Emma finally accepting and coming to terms with her own true self (with a little help from Adam and Shalimar, of course), she uses her powers to track down the other kidnapped new mutants from the Underground, proving herself to Mutant-X. They then allow Emma to be captured by Thorne so that she can specifically get them the location of the prisoners. At the Genomex facility, Jesse who is disguised as typical Genomex guard, searches for the captives, while Adam and Shalimar try for the control room. With a virus uploaded into Genomex’s database, Adam retreats but comes face to face with Eckhart himself. Adam tells Eckhart about the virus but, he doesn’t believe Adam and when the computer suddenly bleeps consistently, only does Eckhart check giving opportunity for Adam to escape. Brennan, who has already been freed by Jesse, along with the rest of the new-mutants and Emma, goes after Thorne. Thorne than facing Brennan runs away. At the end of the day, Brennan finally finds himself a non-criminal based day job.
Being a member of Mutant-X.
Sub-plot: The base of the fight between Genomex and Mutant-X.
Main themes: Acceptance. Being able to accept who you are and coming to peace with your own Mutant ability ala Emma.
Plot Holes: Why did Frank Thorne, the great telekinetic one, runaway from an elemental (in this case it was Brennan.)? Couldn’t he have just “pushed” Brennan off the building or something? Why run without even fighting?
Creepy Moment: The scene in the bio lab where Adam is scanning Shalimar. The way he stuck the round sensor pads on her chest, just right above her extremely low tube top somehow was a little creepy for me. In fact the whole lab scene was creepy to begin with. Even the moment where Adam was watching Shalimar and Emma “focus” from underneath the shadow of the staircase lost to this other scene.
Best Character: Mason Eckhart. He showed awesome evil charisma that was not only suave but perfect as well. He reacted well to the sudden appearance of his nemesis, Adam. Although Adam kept on talking and talking, Mason acted as if he heard it a thousand times over and brushed his accusations off.
Centricity: None. Quite well balanced. Maybe it was a little more on Emma DeLauro and Brennan Mulwray.
Unexplained events: What happened to Ruby, our Esper? Was he podded, killed, released, or even recruited? Plus, how was Ruby captured in the first place? How was he discovered to be linked with the underground?
Things we noticed: The focusing technique of Shalimar’s and Emma’s is actually a renovated version of a tai-chi move called, THE WATERMELON. Seriously, it’s the easiest Tai-chi move around to learn. Just pm me if you need it. Another thing we noticed: When Thorne disables Brennan sub dermal governor; it reminded me a lot of the way someone would switch off/on the alarm of the car.
First Appearance: Sub-dermal Governors
Best Line: Shalimar~ Well, with a little work, being a new mutant can be fabulous. Jesse: Or, you can end up like Thorne. Emma~ I’ll take fabulous anytime.
Worst Line: Thorne to Brennan~ Do you require a little jolt for motivation? (Bad pun… rrreeeeaaaalllll bad pun)
Purist Reaction: 4 WADJETS
