    Brief Summary
Brennan and Jesse meet with a New Mutant named Tina, who tells them about two Russians who she believes saw her using her powers. Brennan and Jesse have just talked Tina into entering the New Mutant Underground when the Russians attack, leaping out of a van with their weapon, called the PushkaH5B7, which can apparently detect and neutralize New Mutants. Brennan is shot by Sonya, one of the Russians, but is rescued by Jesse. Tina is placed with the family of one of Adam’s friends, who is a New Mutant, but his son, Daniel, claims he is normal. While Adam and Jesse are discussing whose fault it was that Brennan got hurt, Daniel places a call to Mason Eckhart, offering to give him his family. Mutant X overhears the conversation, and Jesse kidnaps Daniel and brings him to Sanctuary, where Daniel is tricked into believing it is the GSA Headquarters. Jesse pretends to be Daniel and meets with the Russians, who fall for it and take him with them to their HQ. Unfortunately, they find out Jesse is a New Mutant and inject him with a sub-dermal governor before forcing him to take them to his “family”. At the safehouse, the other members of Mutant X are waiting and they trick the Russians and grab the Pushka. They deneutralize Brennan, then go to save Jesse from the Russians, and Daniel, who used his telekinetic powers to destroy Sonya’s work on the Pushka.

    Themes in the Episode
Betrayal. Would you betray your family like Daniel?
Acceptance – the need for a New Mutant to accept their abilities
Forgiveness, when Daniel’s father forgave his son, and so did Mutant X

    Plot Holes
    None that I could see.

    Creepy Moment of the Episode
When Shalimar was placing Tina with her new family at the safehouse. You could plainly feel that Daniel’s mother was just not comfortable being around New Mutants.

    The Best Character Award
I award this award to Jesse Kilmartin, and not just because I’m a Jesse fan! Jesse shone in this episode. He acted so guilty over Brennan getting shot, when, like Adam said, it wasn’t his fault. He put everything he had into getting the Pushka and the sequence to deneutralize Brennan, and saved Daniel’s from getting shot by Sonya. Well done, Jesse!

    Was it centric?
I felt that this episode was more centered on Jesse, though Shalimar, Emma and Adam also got screentime.

    Unexplained events
How on earth did Adam manage to get information about the Pushka? And what type of New Mutant was Tina? She said she stayed underwater for twenty minutes, so is she a Piscine feral?

    Things we noticed
~ In the Russian’s hideout, nearing the end of the ep, look towards the place where Shalimar jumps down from. You’ll see a man with a cap ducking down.
~ Why didn’t Sonya or Yuri recognize Jesse? They must have seen him running away from them with Tina at the beginning of the episode.

    First Appearance of
~ Emma’s ability to make someone feel like choking. Even though choking isn’t an emotion.

~ The Dojo being able to create holograms. I was as taken like Daniel was the first time I watched this episode – I really thought he had been taken by the GSA!

    Best Line
Sonya: How much? (referring to Daniel’s family)
Jesse[pretending to be Daniel]: Ten thousand each.
    Sonya: Five.
    Jesse: They’re worth ten!
Sonya: I’m getting bored, Yuri. Shoot him.
    Jesse[holds up hands]: Five.

    Worst Line
    Adam(to Daniel): It’s not words, it’s deeds.

    Purist Reaction
    4 and a ½ out of 5 Wadjets.

The half-Wadjet I took away was because this episode should have been aired later in the season. We’ve only watched two episodes, and now all of a sudden in the third episode, Brennan almost dies, and we’re expected to care? How do Brennan, Emma, Shal, Jesse and Adam become a team so quickly? Instant bonding?

But otherwise, this episode was typical Mutant X, and I loved it. At the end of the episode, if you ignore Adam talking to Daniel and telling him what a stupid thing he’d done, you can see a beautiful Shal/Jesse scene, which is good, since we remember that Shal and Jesse were the two original members of Mutant X, and are very close. We also see how well Adam can read Jesse when Adam tells Jesse it wasn’t his fault Brennan was shot. Then, the episode ends with a beautiful team spirit scene as Brennan destroys everything in the hideout and the team silently cheers him on. All in all, this episode defined most of what made me love S1.

    RK9.
