 Plot Summary:
The GSA attempt to abduct a New Mutant by the name of Charlotte Cooke, who can manipulate the moral compass, however, their plans to abduct her are stop by Shalimar who crashes in through a skylight. A fight follows which results in the GSA taking Charlotte’s friend Skeet instead of her.
The Mutant X team takes Charlotte to a safehouse where Adam and Jesse are awaiting her arrival. Here we learn that Adam knew Charlotte when she was a little girl, and Charlotte expresses her desire to join Mutant X, but Adam tells her that they don’t need any new members and that they can help her slip into the Underground. Charlotte, unsatisfied by Adam’s response, uses her powers on Jesse and Shalimar and it makes them turn against Adam and one another. The toxin wears off after a few minutes, but not before Shalimar and Jesse begin fighting each other, which results with Shalimar in need of some medical attention. While this fighting was going on, Charlotte slipped out unnoticed.
At Sanctuary, Emma and Brennan learn that Charlotte’s father worked with Adam and had sold mission secrets to an unknown buyer. Before he could be brought to court on those charges, he committed suicide.
Meanwhile, at Genomex, Charlotte’s friend Skeet was interrogated by Lynch, Eckhart’s right hand man of the week. Finding his knowledge of Charlotte useful the Eckhart decides to send Skeet with the GSA team to track her down.
Adam sends Emma, Brennan, and Jesse to try to find Charlotte, while he conducts an analysis of the affects of the toxin on Shalimar. Emma telempathically finds Charlotte’s location and she and Brennan proceed to where Charlotte was hiding. However, once there, the GSA arrives and they abduct Charlotte.
Lynch and Skeet convince Charlotte that she would want to work with Eckhart, since both she and him want to take Adam down (Charlotte blamed Adam for her father committing suicide). After showing Eckhart a demonstration of her powers on Lynch, Eckhart decides that Charlotte has the skills necessary to assist the GSA in the field.
Back at Sanctuary, Emma and Adam get a call from a clearly upset Charlotte, who wants to meet Adam. Adam tells Emma he wants to met Charlotte alone. Once he gets to Charlotte’s apartment, Charlotte convinces Adam that it is safe for him to be near her. Adam affectionately gives Charlotte a reassuring hug and as he does so Emma comes though the door. Her presence distracts Adam long enough for Charlotte to use her powers on him. Charlotte knocks Emma out and Adam picks her up, tell Charlotte that he will meet her at Genomex.
In the Helix Adam tells the team that Emma was affected by the toxin and is having an unusual reaction since she is a psionic. Once he arrives at Sanctuary to a prepaid lab, Adam has Shalimar retrieve him files on a mind-altering procedure and instructs Brennan and Jesse to go find Charlotte. Emma comes to, but Adam sedates her before she has an opportunity to call for help. When Shalimar returns, she over hears Adam speaking to unconscious Emma. Realizing that Adam was the one infected she contacts Brennan and Jesse and tells them to return to Sanctuary. Adam cuts the lights in Sanctuary and plays a game of Cat and Mouse with Shalimar, which results in him sedating her.
Shalimar begins to come to on the Dojo, as Brennan and Jesse return. She tries to warn them that it was a trap, but alas, they step on the Dojo and are enclosed by a force field created to control their powers. At this time Adam leaves Sanctuary with a disk with the names and locations of all the New Mutants in the Underground.
Adam arrives at Genomex and renders Eckhart unconscious. Next he finds Charlotte, who was forced to wear a subdermal governor and frees her of her restrains and the governor. They leave together to sell the disk to the highest bidder.
Emma comes to in the lab and uses a laser set up over the med-bed scanner to free herself from her restrains. She rushes to help the team only to find the Security System reprogrammed in Finnish. Luckily for the team Emma dated a foreign exchange student from Helsinki and could easily turn off the force field and the team rushed off to stop Adam.
Adam met up with the team in an abandoned alley. Knowing all of their fears he began to use them against the team. He set a car on fire to react with Shalimar’s feral fear of fire. He drenched Brennan with a hose, since the water prevents him from using his electricity. Adam waited until Jesse took a breath to hit him in the stomach with a lead pipe. Shalimar attacked him and he got the upper hand and began choking her with the pipe. Emma tried to reach him to get him to stop, but Charlotte got to him first and reversed the affect of her toxin.
The team and Adam put Charlotte into the Underground and returned to Sanctuary where Adam tried to apologize for his behavior. Shalimar told him, it wasn’t really him, and they understood and forgave him.
Themes in the episode:
The effects of suicide on the people that the deceased left behind. How would you react if the darkest part of your being was brought to the surface?
Plot Holes:
Nope! None! Thank goodness! Another good one!
Creepy Moment of the Episode:
The creepiest moment of the episode was when Adam was turned morally and he was planning on operating on Emma. John Shea did a wonderful job in this episode. I personally had shivers down my spine when he said lines such as “In a while nothing much will matter anymore.” “My little mind bending freak of nature.” “Where’s that feral with my files.” “Excuse me a moment.” It’s not as much what he said, but how he said it. It was creepy, yet awesome!
The Best Character Award:
The winner of the “Best Character Award” for this episode is Charlotte. She was able to infiltrate Mutant X and on two occasions turn team members against one another as a means of revenge against Adam. However, by the end of the episode she saw the errors of her way and helped the team by turning Adam “good” again. Therefore, for that outstanding performance she clearly deserves to be named the “Best Character” within this episode.
Was it centric?:
This episode was focused on Adam. We were able to see the different sides of his character. We saw the guilt ridden Adam who blamed himself for the death of Charlotte’s father. There was the insane/evil Adam that was plotting against the team and defeating them. Not to mention the fact that he almost sold the New Mutant database. We were able to see the remorseful Adam, who felt bad for hurting his teammates and using their known weaknesses against them. By being able to see these different sides to Adam, it is quite clear that this episode was slightly centric around his character.
Unexplained Events / Things We Noticed:
~ Shalimar tells Charlotte that she has friends waiting on the roof, however, Jesse and Adam were waiting at a safehouse for Charlotte’s arrival and Brennan and Emma were at Sanctuary when we first see them and it does not appear that they could be at both places (since the Helix went to the safehouse, not Sanctuary after picking up Charlotte.) If that is the case, who was in the Helix on the roof?
~ Why was the GSA trying to abduct Charlotte at the same time that Mutant X was trying to come to help her? Shalimar said that they were glad she had contacted them. If that was the case, why was the GSA after her at the same time? Maybe they bugged Sanctuary’s phone line?
~ Since when wasn’t it Mutant X policy to take the new mutant of the week to Sanctuary? They always did before…
~ Why was Lynch meaner than before after Charlotte touched him? They said her powers were to turn someone bad to good or good to bad. Either, they were wrong and her powers were truly to turn someone from good to bad or bad to worse, or Lynch wasn’t bad… Does this mean that the GSA might not be the bad guys everyone makes them out to be?
~ What was Emma saying to her foreign exchange student boyfriend in Finnish? She knew a really weird combination of Finnish words to be able to deactivate the force field around the Dojo.
~ Shalimar said it was unlikely that Adam made a mistake by using Finnish as the language that he reprogrammed the computer system to since Emma could speak it. How could he have known that? What type of background checks did he perform on all of the team member before they joined Mutant X?
First Appearance of …
~ The force field that was created with all the team’s powers in mind. This force field will be used again in Presumed Guilty. It was nice to see that Adam had a back up in case the team decided to turn on him. My only concern is why did the team neglect to ask Adam about the need of such a force field. Didn’t Adam trust them?
Best Lines:
Jesse: “Adam, where does it say you get to make all of the decisions?” Jesse: “Don’t use that tone with me Adam! I’ve had it!” Charlotte: “Did you know he was prone to this type of violent behavior when you hired him?”
Worst Line:
Charlotte: “Adam, you’re not yourself.” Adam: “No, I’m better.”
Purist Reactions:
4 out of 5 Wadjets

This episode was incredible. The acting, the writing and the directing done within this episode was amazing and made it memorable. It only loses a point due to the fact that Charlotte’s powers don’t completely make sense. For the most part, the average Purist will find this episode at the least enjoyable, at the most unforgettable.
