Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

For the Love of Tom: A Review of “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen”

This movie is aimed for children between the ages of 8-13. If you go to see this movie unaccompanied by a child of this age group, you are truly seeing it for the love of Tom. I must confess, I am such a person. Jessegal and I went together to see this movie on its opening weekend:   that’s true Tom dedication.

    The Audience

When we first entered the theater we immediately felt out of place.  Here were two 18 year olds among a sea of preteens and their parents. With both of us working at a daycare center part-time, we quickly found seats and prayed that we wouldn’t be spotted by any of the children that attend the daycare facility.  Luckily for us, we were never noticed even though one of the children did attend that showing.  The most surprising thing about the audience was the lack of parental supervision during the showing. Many parents walked their 8-12 year olds into the theater, sat them down, and walked out.  After the movie was over, the kids waited there till their parents came and got them. This truly blew me away. My parents would have suffered through the film with my younger sisters and me at that age. What is the world coming to?

    The Basics of the Movie

A 15-year-old girl named Mary (who preferred to be called Lola) was forced to move from New York City (which she loved) to a New Jersey suburb.  Mary was an aspiring actress who always over dramatized things within her life.  She would even down right lie about things to change people’s perceptions about her and to make herself more likable. (Mary told one of her friends that her father (Tom’s character) was dead.  Jessegal and I almost shot ourselves for thinking that Tom’s character was only in the movie for 45 seconds that explained how he had died.) Not trying to spoil this movie for others, I will only give brief details about the plot.  Mary and her friend go to NYC to see a concert that they don’t have tickets to.  Not being able to buy them from a scalper, they wonder around the city looking for where the after party will be.  Realizing that they are being followed, they find out that Mary’s mom had asked her father to keep an eye on them. After being denied access to the after party, the girls meet the lead singer of the band (a drunk that they help) and he gets access for Mary, her friend and her father.  Once they return to suburbia, no one believes them until Mary’s father intervenes. Also, Mary convinces the lead singer of the band to stop drinking and to change his life around (how sweet!).

    Things to Look For

    ~  Tom on a motorcycle.
~  Tom with a big, cute dog.
~  Sweet Tom.  (100% opposite of Eckhart)
~  Tom wearing a weird hat.

    Should I See it?

Purely for the Love of Tom!  If you love Tom as Eckhart, you will enjoy seeing Tom in a completely different role.  If you don’t like Tom because of Eckhart, check out this movie to see Tom in a different light. Tom is a wonderful actor and he makes all of his roles very enjoyable. This movie, though slightly silly and juvenile, has Shalgal’s seal of approval for all Tom fans to see.
