Then look for me by moonlight, Watch for me by moonlight, I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way~The Highwayman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shalimar winced in pain as the flames licked her pale skin.
"Freaks like you don't deserve to live," the man whispered dangerously.
She looked towards the door, expecting to see the others burst in. God, Damnit! thought Shalimar. She should have known better, she had heard the rumors, the stories. Whispers in bars, clubs and safehouse, that told of bands of "Concerned Citizens" that would round up New Mutants and kill them. She had stormed out of the bar when Brennan had gotten on her nerves.
"Oh, If I ever get out of this...." Shalimar whispered her eyes flashing.
"Oh, trust me." he said "You won't."
He turned around and walked out of the room. She looked down at the ropes that bound her wrists and swore again. It had been several hours since the last time she had seen the others. They must be worried by now.
"Shalimar?" asked Jesse as he phased through the wall.
"Jesse!" she said smiling.
He squatted down next to the chair she was strapped to and began untying her.
"How did you find me?" she asked.
"One good thing about these so called Concerned Citizens is that they have no clue what a com-link is." he replied smirking.
"Where are the others?" she asked.
"On their way," he replied "Thought I'd get here quicker."
She stood up finally and stretched her arms above her head.
"Feels good," she said.
"Shall We?" asked Jesse gesturing towards the brick wall.
He held out his hand and Shalimar smiled.
"We Shall," she replied taking it.
He phased the wall and they stepped through. Shalimar looked up and down the empty hallway.
"Where are we?" she asked.
As they stood there contemplating their next move, heavy footsteps sounded on the metal stairs nearby.
"Brennan?" Whispered Jesse "where are you guys?"
"Level two, you?"
"Level three," said Shalimar when she saw the sign over a door "You guys might want to hurry."
Shalimar looked at Jesse as four large men barreled down the hallway.
"Their gone," she whispered.
Jesse smiled at her.
"Did you get an urge to trip them?" he asked.
Shalimar looked down the hallway then turned towards him. She gasped in shock when she saw him lying on the ground.
"You thought you could get away?" asked the man who had captured her.
"What did you do?" she asked her voice trembling.
Brennan and Emma ran towards them.
"What the..." stammered Brennan.
"More Mutants," said the man smiling.
Brennan looked at Shalimar whose eyes were locked on Jesse's fallen form then he looked at Emma. He concentrated hard and summoned up the biggest coil he could.
"He's gone," said Emma after she checked the man.
Shalimar couldn't move. It was like she wasn't there, it was like she was watching Emma and Brennan run to Jesse's side.
"Shal?" asked Emma.
Shalimar shook the fuzz from her head and ran to Jesse's side.
"Jess?" she whispered.
He opened his eyes slowly, one bright eye after another.
"Don't leave me," she whispered.
"Don't worry, I'll find you," he whispered as her golden hair tickled his nose "I always do."
He placed her hand on his heart and Shalimar felt it as her best friend's life slipped away. She gasped and laid her head down on his chest.
"Oh, Jesse." she whispered "I love you."
