Mason Solitary trees, if they grow at all, grow strong; and a boy deprived of a father’s care often develops, if he escapes the perils of youth, an independence and vigour of thought which may restore in after life the heavy loss of early days.” --Winston Spencer Churchill, The River War
Surprisingly, more is known of Mason Eckhart than any member of Mutant X. What remains unclear is how the details fit together or how they might explain him.
Mason Eckhart and his twin Marcus were born 6 June 1962 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Eight years later, Marcus drowned. Eckhart’s losses continued when his mother Marilyn committed suicide a few years later.

specialized in violent cases, he locked son Mason into a ward for a weekend. Later, he sent him off to boarding schools where the two had little contact. Eckhart later attended West Point where he studied military law. He is not a scientific specialist in any sense.
Mason Eckhart was recruited to Genomex in 1984, married about the same time. His recruitment had the eventual goal of balancing Adam’s influence, and keeping Dr Paul Breedlove focused. Before his marriage ended six years later, he fathered three children: son Grey, and twin daughters Michele and Deidre. Shortly after the divorce, Incident X occurred in 1991.
Details about Incident X are few, but clearly Eckhart blames Adam for his condition. Sorting out the truth is impossible given available data. What is known is that Eckhart’s immune system was seriously compromised, and the once active (in earlier years, he competed in track and rowing) leaving Eckhart in a seriously debilitated condition.
After Adam bolted Genomex in 1998, the organization was left in the control of founder Breedlove and Eckhart. Adam left behind the technology he developed for the control of dangerous Genomex-created mutants, the subdermal governors and the stasis pods.
As the majority of Genomex mutants reached maturity and the full development of their powers, the need for control became apparent, especially of the many destructive or criminal mutants. Mason Eckhart launched a plan in 2007 to round up the Genomex mutants before they could do damage, or spawn more individuals like themselves.
