Fact Sheet
Name: Mason Eckhart (sometimes spelled Eckhardt even through Eckhart is the correct spelling.)
Played By: Tom McCamus
Original Name: Albion Magnus (was seen as being too similar to the X-men and was changed to Mason Eckhart.)
Intro Scene: Mason Eckhart is receiving a status report on the activity that happened with the GSA the night before from Frank Thorne. While receiving this status report, Mason is reapplying his plastic skin, thus showing that his character has something wrong with his physical state without going into extreme detail.
First Line: “That sounds like Adam and his people.” To Thorne in “The Shock of the New”
Mutant: Nope! Sorry Mason Eckhart is simply a human.
Best Line: “So much for the autopsy.” To Harrison in “Lazarus Syndrome” “Bastards!” To Adam in “Presumed Guilty”
Worst Line: “Feeling like a million bucks. It’s amazing what a new hairstyle does for oneself.” ~ “Lest He Become” To Adam and Emma (What is a Mason without his white Wig?)
The Line That Should Have Been: “O Dear God!”
Most Memorable Scene: There are definitely two! In “Nothing to Fear” the scene where Eckhart is in the cage facing his worst fear, being trapped with rats (contracting diseases). This was very memorable because we finally get to see the vulnerable side of Mason. The other most memorable scene was when Mason went to visit Adam in jail during “Presumed Guilty”. Now there are two Purist views on why this is memorable. The first believes that we got to see the kinder, gentler side of Eckhart. We got to see Mason play the caring and concerned friend. It was very different from the Mason that we see everyday on the series. Where as the other version believes that Mason is there playing with Adam's mind. The "caring and concerned friend" is just a sham and I believe this is, indeed, one of Mason's most memorable scenes exactly for that reason and for the masterful performance of McCamus. The way he oozed himself to Adam, the precise tone of voice, the inflection just slightly hammish, made the viewer realize it was all a lie, while still believing that Adam didn't see through it. And the way he turned back from Adam and towards the camera, uttering the "Bastards!" was so precisely phoney! Mason is more devilish than ever.
Most Unmemorable Scene: The episodes “Lest He Becomes” and “Into the Moonless Night” just isn’t the Mason Eckhart of Season One (or Reality Check). It might be his twin brother, but it isn’t Mason Grey Eckhart!
Most Note Worthy Episode: Dark Star Rising
Why Is He On Mutant X?: He’s the “bad guy”. Eckhart is the head of the Genetic Security Agency and Genomex, which are organizations dedicated to the capture and containment of New Mutants in order to protect humanity.
Fashion Sense: White wigs, just past the knuckle gloves and pin stripe suits! That’s the classic image of Mason that all fans think of whenever they in vision Mason Eckhart.
Last Line: “You will not defeat me!” ~ “Into the Moonless Night” to Brennan
Last Scene: Eckhart was trapped on a ledge with Brennan, who was just tortured by a mutant that was working with Eckhart. Eckhart uncharacteristically pleads for his life, but Brennan throws three zaps of electricity at Eckhart. The last knocks Eckhart off the ledge, leaving him dead on the ground. Brennan, after murdering Eckhart, justifies the death in his mind by saying “He had to be stopped.” If only someone could stop Brennan…
