The stark differences separating Season 1 from Season 2 make S1 appear to be a fortuitous accident.  Set design in S1 was carefully done with color and texture as a background for characters.  Outdoor scenes frequently were tinted yellow of orange. Some photography was brilliant, using odd, unusual angles and indirect, reflected views.  Music was keyed to individual episodes.

The efforts of a lot of talented people came together synergistically. Even when the story was less than satisfactory, Mutant X had a style, a feel, an unmistakable look.

All of this vanished for S2, which had no particular style or feel, and could be any program.  Add confusing characterizations, usually absurd stories, unintentionally funny dialogue, and you have the debacle of S2.

Our purpose is to keep alive the best of S1, and to work through in fan fiction stories that are prequels to S1, set in S1, tie up the loose ends of S1, or those set in alternate universes using the original series premise.

    Why Mutant X?

Not only was it just television, none of us has illusions that Mutant X was great television.  Nevertheless, we all found something in the universe of MX that fascinated and stirred our imaginations.  For entertainment on a lightweight level, the series raised a number of interesting questions never properly explored.

The most obvious question is whether or not transgenic humans should be created. Transgenic animals and plants are not theory, but exist.  The Genomex mutants are analogues of such organisms. Practically, making a transgenic human is possible, but ethical issues remain.

If the procedure could be refined such that genetic flaws could be repaired in the germ cells and eliminated from a family line, this technique would be of great benefit. Very likely, people would also use it to have children with particular eye and hair colors, and other frivolous traits.

This leads to the question of who is a human?  A child with transgenically created magenta eyes is definitely a human, but what about one with dozens of characteristics from many species? What about an individual whose behavior is markedly different from more ordinary people?  What about one whose genetics are so different from the rest of humanity that they cannot make babies with them?

After creating an individual who does not turn out as hoped and who may even pose a threat to society, how does one fairly and ethically deal with them?  Who is responsible for the error and who pays for any treatment or rehabilitation?

On this site, “Mutant X” primarily means material from Season 1 and Tribune’s faux websites for Genomex, the Breedlove Foundation, and others. We believe S1 to be the core of the series, and what is worth remembering about it.

When MX returned in Season 2, the premise was cast aside, the photography became ordinary, and the music ill-suited.  Episode 201 warned of a tiresome season with Adam the scientist practicing ceremonial magic. Much worse was to come.

Towards the end of S2, a handful of episodes were well-done, but the effort was too little, too late, ending with a lame finale which led only to speculation about who would be cut from the cast instead of what was going to happen next.

With the thinking characters gone, the series holds little promise.  Certainly there will be no return to S1.

Season 1 was good, but it left many loose ends and unanswered questions. Part of this was due to inconsistent writing. The characters needed more development.  Since none of this will happen on screen, fanfiction is the only path open to resolving questions and filling out characters.

Adam was two-dimensional at best, and at worst, possibly no hero at all. He needed desperately to consistently feel guilt for his part in the creation of Genomex mutants and to stop trying to shift responsibility to others. He did everything short of insisting that he “was just following orders”.  His lack of a past was not mysterious, just indicative of how little thought was given to creation of Adam. At the beginning of S2, he acquired a surname without any explanation offered!

Brennan was introduced into the series as an unrepentant street thug, and 44 episodes later, did not develop beyond that. Minimally, he should have shown remorse and regret for his past life of crime, and should have made whatever possible restitution to some of his victims.  Short of this, Brennan is arguably using MX as a convenient hideaway from the police.

Emma was considered by the Genetic Security Agency to be the most dangerous of Mutant X, but her skills were underutilized in S1 and some were forgotten completely in S2!  The effects of bombardment with the emotions of other people was never developed, just mentioned.

Jesse, poor Jesse, should have been Adam’s favorite since both were highly intelligent nerds, and nerds do stick together. Inexplicably, the barely educated Brennan became Adam’s favorite.  With the exception of a few episodes in S1, Jesse was no more than a convenient repair guy no one thought about until something broke. Or, as someone once said, “Jesse’s the hamster everyone in the family forgets to feed.” Jesse deserved so much better. He could have been a prime source of (intended) humor.

Shalimar began by being the mother cat of MX, caring, warm, and generous.  As the oldest member of the group, and one associated with Adam for fifteen years, one would expect her to have acquired more of Adam’s knowledge, skills and sophistication. Instead we hear suggestions of her involvement in crime. Adam must not have been much of a surrogate father.  In S2, Shalimar descended into giggly, sleazy bimbohood, the character becoming less and less intelligent and mature.

Mason “returned” in S2, but not really. Whoever that was in the S2 finale and whoever it was zorched by Brennan in the S3 opener, it wasn’t really Mason Grey Eckhart.  Perhaps it was his Evil Twin.

Between unexplored or undeveloped aspects of characters and loose ends of S1, there are plenty of ways to expand the universe of Mutant X in stories both canon and alternate universe.  Fanfiction here is divided into these two basic categories, and subdivided further by character emphasis.
