Filling the Silences

SDeneen writes canon.

Good for her, you’d say. How darn hard can it be?

In an universe such as Mutant X’s? Very hard.  Negotiating your way around the inconsistencies, the lack of information, the conflicting backgrounds, and managing to write a good story is a prowess! A prowess SDeneen accomplishes with flair, grace and unwavering love for the characters.

She is a huge Adam fan, but writes beautiful ensemble pieces.  On her stories, our five team mates are heroes and there is always a new mutant in distress, in need of their help and support. This is canon at its best. This is adventure in its most entertaining form.

We, from PureMX, wish that you have as good a time reading SDeneen’s stories as we have had posting them here. Have fun!

BTW, does SDeneen own Mutant X main characters and some peripheral ones that pop up on her stories? No!  Do we own them? No!  She owns her original characters and the plots for her stories, yes. Sue her, or sue us, and you’ll only make your lawyers richer

Falconia.

    Interview with SDeneen

How did you happen to write stories set in the universe of Mutant X?

I’ve enjoyed writing for years.  During the summer between season 1 and 2, I found myself fantasizing about different possible scenarios.  The stories start like little seeds that just grow and grow until I plant them in their own little pot (write them down), then they seem to be happy and another little seed can start to grow. I usually develop the stories mentally for at least a couple weeks and then write them all in a flurry of activity, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning over a couple days.

What is the theme (or themes) of your stories?

Usually there is an outside character who represents some snippet of my personality (don’t worry, I’m not NEARLY as messed up as some of my characters-- they are exaggerations). My stories tend to be similar to the episodes in that they are self contained stories that could be conveyed in an hour or two.

Who/What are your influences? Are these influences present in any of the Mutant X fanfiction you have written so far?

My Christian values are an influence (although I push many of my characters into immoral situations) and I try to sneak something into most of my stories.

What other kinds of things have you written?

Lots of mission trip reports, public service articles and such.  I’ve had two letters to the editor published in a major West Coast paper, one was even selected for letter of the month.  I also have a journal that I keep on line in an effort to save the trees.

    Name your favorite writers.

I’m not much of a book reader.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to write?

Computers are wonderful! I like to start with an outline and then just fill in areas as they leap to mind. I always prefer to keep the whole story as a work in process until it is complete, there have been a number of times that something has come up toward the end of the process that wouldn’t make sense if they weren’t introduced in an earlier chapter.  Empty space is not a bad thing, a page of solid writing will make peoples’ eyes go buggy. Shorter paragraphs make for easier reading and remember to start a new paragraph whenever a different person is speaking.

What are your favorite aspects of Mutant X?

I like the conspiracy theory aspect. I’m sure that there is a lot going on out in the world that the average person doesn’t know about. I truly believe that anyone who fully understood everything going on today would curl up into a little ball and make pathetic whimpering sounds.

    Your least favorite aspects?

Inconsistencies, I try to keep the stories as Canon as possible, and it is frustrating when the writers themselves don’t seem as concerned with what has already been shown before.

Do you admit to your friends that you watch Mutant X?  That you write stories set in the Mutant X universe?

I readily admit that I watch it, but there are only a few of my closer friends who know about the writing, and only 2 that have read my NC-17 stuff. The slash stories were originally posted under the pseudonym anneonamouse because I didn’t want anyone thinking that I was a lesbian, I’ve relaxed now that several lesbians have told me that, although they enjoyed the stories, it was obvious that they were written by someone who was straight because in each of them, the actor could have been replaced with a guy with very little change in the story.

What would you like people to know about you?

I do have a life; I just let my imagination out to play occasionally.  I think it is a healthy thing as long as I don’t let it run too far from home. Sadly, Xiphan was one of my biggest encouragers and he didn't get to read the last few stories that I wrote - may he rest in peace.
