Past objections have been raised to this timeline. They may be readily dismissed:
1)”The word of Seth Howard is assumed to be like the voice of God.” Howard no longer works for Tribune, and more than once fed fans untruths online. So much for Seth Howard’s comment that the faux websites had nothing to do with the series! It just doesn’t make any sense that Tribune would create and maintain HUNDREDS of pages of material that meant NOTHING!
2)”The two dreadful Mutant X comic books are printed material, and take precedence over all material, website or tube canon.” Anyone who has read these painfully awful comic books knows that the characters resemble series characters in name alone. Adam and Breedlove ARE NOT contemporaries. Mason Eckhart does not have the table manners of a farm animal. Shalimar’s biography is not that shown in the comic book.
And then, there is this: Tribune disavows the comic books and says they have nothing do with the series! Anyone who dwells upon the comic books as holy canon writ is wasting the time! http://www.mutantx.net/about/faq.html Page down to the question about the comic books.
No proponent of these objections has ever put forth a comprehensive timeline incorporating all of the material the above timeline accounts for, in fact insisting that no timeline is needed and that chaos works just fine.
Which is of course, nonsense. So much for the objections.
********************************************************************* How this timeline was derived:
Sorting out the timeline of Mutant X, relying on nothing more than Tribune websites and Season 1 canon, is straightforward and easy.
There is no shortage of more pressing concerns in the world, but like all puzzles, those of Mutant X have their fascinations. The production company has helpfully provided all data needed to solve these puzzles.
[And ignored the material later, especially during Season 2, hatching out absurdities such as Brennan Mulwray's age pushing 40.]
Nothing that follows is fan fiction. Every data point is referenced to a corporate-sponsored website or to a particular episode. No leaps of logic are required for any conclusion.
The Timeline
What year is the series set in?
Using unambiguous information available on www.genomex.net, this is surprisingly straightforward to determine.
Curiously, the most detailed and specific information is available for Mason Eckhart. These data are key in sorting out the timeline.
Reference: Background Check Results Eckhart, Mason http://www.genomex.net/security/meckhart/Eckhart_profile.html
The website lists a specific birthdate, listing their source as the U S Army.
6 June 1962
Eckhart is supposed to be 45 years old
1962 + 45 years = 2007
Season 1 can only be 2007. Season 2 is 2008.
When did Incident X take place?
2007 - 16 years = 1991
This just works.
Referring again to the background check, it is plausible to assume that Eckhart graduated from high school at 18, in 1980, and that he started West Point the same year. Recruited by Genomex directly, it is reasonable to set 1984 as his first year with the company. Also to make everything fit, it is also plausible to set 1984 as the year of his marriage, which allows the required time for the three children and its failure after 6 years, in 1990.
(Digression. If Eckhart is Catherine's father, he had to sire her before Incident X, because of his condition. If he's not regenerating cells, he's sterile, and has been so since the accident.)
These numbers work. Setting the series at any earlier time makes the genomex.net material worthless and serves no useful purpose.
When was the first mutant created?
If Gabriel Ashlocke is the first mutant, then the answer is found in "Time Squared" 203. We're shown the youthful Adam starting at Genomex, and told that Ashlocke is 10 years old in 1978, which implies Ashlocke's birth in 1968.
Other episodes imply that additional mutants were created shortly afterward. In "Russian Roulette" 103, we're shown a second-generation mutant ready to turn in his father to the GSA. Two other second-generation mutants appear in Season 1, Danielle's daughter Catherine ("A Whiter Shade of Pale" 111) and Joshua Valentine ("Crime of the New Century" 109).
There appear to be fewer of these late 1960s - early 1970s mutants. Paul Breedlove gets sole credit for their creation. The first two Season 1 episodes imply that the "children of Genomex" are all in their early twenties, implying their births in the mid-1980s or slightly earlier, and are the work of Breedlove and Adam.
Where does Paul Breedlove fit into the overall scheme?
Breedlove is the central figure, but the grandfatherly, guilt-ridden man we see murdered in "Shock of the New" is more than he seems; he may in fact be fooling himself as much as anyone else.
The "official for-public-consumption" biography of Paul Breedlove may be found at www.breedlovefoundation.org, which is probably the slickest of Tribune's faux websites.
This bio indicates a vaguely European origin for Breedlove and a fortuitous marriage (1961) to monied Dr Eleanor Singer. Over the years, Breedlove's doman extended well beyond the R C Harris Plant, er, Genomex-by-the-Waters, with clinics and technical centers in several locations.
A darker version of the same story is related at www.genomecities.com/tagc/breedlove.html
This source lists Breedlove's date of birth as 4 July 1931 in Salzburg, with the birthname of Kurt von Schuler.
Kurt/Paul wasted no time getting into serious science, and despite his extreme youth participated in the 'medical' experiments upon Nazi death camp prisoners, escaping prosecution because of his age. Later he entered the US in the 1950s.
This source also indicates that between 1964 and 1982 2500 mother-to-be were somehow 'marked'. It is not clear if this resulted in mutant births.
So the roots of Genomex go back much farther and spread wider than anything in the series indicates.
Who (or possibly what) is Adam?
There is no clear answer.
www.genomex.net/security/profiles/mutantx/adam.html
Genomex records indicate that Adam himself may not know his true origins, either by way of amnesia or brainwashing. "No records of actual surname, parentage, or schooling exist."
Maybe he adopted the surname "Kane" because he liked the movie.
Adam was brought to Genomex while a teenager by Dr Breedlove in 1978 ("Time Squared" 203).
"Among the staff only Dr Breedlove and Mr Eckhart gained any true confidences from Adam, trusts that injured them both. No other strong Genomex alliances were formed during his tenure."
www.genomex.net/security/meckhart/adam_profile.html
Mason Eckhart did try to discover Adam's origins. There is question whether files detailing Adam's past ever existed at Genomex, but if they did, they were destroyed. Eckhart charged an agent with unraveling Adam's past. In turn, this agent contracted three independent agencies, which made three contradictory, dissimilar reports (it is well worth going to the web site to read these in detail):
1) Adam is the illegitimate child of Dr Eleanor Singer (Breedlove's wife), father unknown
2) Adam is the kidnapped son of European royalty with a line to Einstein.
3) Adam is not human at all, but an android incorporating Breedlove's DNA
Adam left Genomex some time after Incident X (previously established as 1991) but exactly when is unclear
What was Incident X?
Even though Incident X is referred to frequently, details are not available on any of the faux websites. Only the results of Incident X are detailed.
www.genomex.net/research/kharrison/eckhart_condition.html
"I've viewed the security tapes on record of "X". There is no doubt it was brought on by the confrontation with Adam, but the actual damage done to Eckhart appears to have been a freak accident that could not be replicated. Hence, no remedy. In fact, Adam is fortunate he did not share the same fate, but from what I understand, this kind of outrageous luck is typical for him."
(RealScience doesn't operate this way, but consider the source--Dr Harrison.)
What was Adam's Involvement at Genomex? Major and significant, since he was personally brought into the program by Breedlove, and is responsible for creation of the subdermal governors and the stasis pods.
Season 2 would have the unwary believe Adam was but one of many researchers ("Body and Soul" 209) but this sounds like an attempt to clean up Adam's past.
Elsewhere, there are references to Adam's twenty years at Genomex {reference}, which, if that is an exact rather than rounded figure, means he left the company in 1998, about 7 years post-Incident X.
It is not credible that Adam spent 20 years at Genomex working in close collaboration with Breedlove without having any idea that his research had any but pure and noble applications and outcomes. Adam may have said as much to others so many times he began to believe himself.
Spend 5 years at any corporation's labs, network (especially with secretaries and maintenance people, who talk to everyone and go everywhere!), listen carefully, and you WILL know where a lot of bodies are buried.
What is Adam's Goal?
This is difficult to discern. Perhaps Adam himself is unsure of his goal.
He states that he is preparing the world for mutants, but the how of that is fuzzy.
He seems determined to scatter the Genomex mutants through the population. He also continues to manipulate the DNA of his team; perhaps he is continuing to carry on his experiments while calling them something else.
In "Shock of the New" 101 it is not clear how long Shalimar and Jesse have been with Adam. However, if it's 2007, and Adam left Genomex in 1998, then Adam's been doing something for about 9 years. What?
Were there other teams, now lost?
[According to S3, YES!]
What is Eckhart's Goal?
One goal which would have made much sense would have been a search for a cure, whole or partial, or at very least, alleviation of symptoms. This would have been a powerful motivator.
If one accepts Eckhart as Archfiend Extraordinaire, then almost any projection is possible, including building an army of obedient mutants to conquer the world. However, save for his berzerker/MK-Ultra ramblings in "Dark Star Rising" 110, there is no evidence of ambition beyond Genomex/GSA.
Most plausibly, Eckhart believes rounding up and containing the Breedlove/Adam mutants, to spare the world their problems, to be his life's mission. In fact, he says as much at the end of "I Scream the Body Electric" 102.
Review of confrontations between Adam and Eckhart reveal Adam to be more emotional and even irrational. Probably Adam was intended to be a Dashing Hero, but his words are unconvinving. Eckhart is almost invariably more rational and mission-oriented.
One-on-one encounters between hapless GSA agents and mutants always leave GSA guys embarrassed, but in "Dancing on the Razor" 122 Eckhart shows up with a heavily armed band which outnumber the mutants 2 to 1.
Going one-on-one with mutants is hopeless, but showing up with overwhelming force—one man to take on the mutant directly, the second to destroy them while occupied, would work easily. The GSA could have won this one, though it would have been bloody. Eckhart didn't retreat. He decided the issue was not worth the blood, though Adam was spoiling for a fight ("Come and get it.").
